Arctic Sea

The Arctic Sea is a body of water located in the far north, surrounding the North Pole. It is connected to other bodies of saltwater by several straits and borders land masses such as Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Russia and Canada. The sea covers an area estimated at 14 million square kilometers (5.4 million square miles). Its average depth has been measured at 1,205 meters (3,953 feet) though its deepest point reaches nearly 5 kilometer deep (16404 ft).

The region’s climate is characterized by extreme cold temperatures for most of the year; in some areas temperatures can reach -60°C (-76 °F). This cold environment prevents much marine life from existing there due to low salinity levels combined with ice cover that remains for much of the year. However certain species are adapted to living in these hostile conditions including polar bears and seals as well as numerous fish species like cod and halibut. Furthermore various types of algae have been identified during melting periods when sunlight penetrates through thin layers of ice covering portions of the sea surface allowing photosynthesis to take place.

In recent years global warming has had a strong impact on this fragile ecosystem resulting in increased melting rates which lead to rising sea levels around Arctic regions causing flooding issues among coastal communities while also having negative impacts on environmental biodiversity both above and below the waterline due mostly to changed ocean currents caused by reduced ice coverage leading many organisms away from their usual habitat or food sources thus creating large disruptions within localized ecosystems . Additionally human activities such as oil drilling have further added stressors making conservation efforts more important than ever before if we hope preserve what little remains left untouched within our planet’s last remaining wildernesses.
