Biophysical Society

by Liam O'Connor

The Biophysical Society was founded in 1956 by a group of scientists who were interested in the application of physical techniques to the study of biological systems. The Society now has over 8,000 members worldwide and publishes the leading scientific journal, Biophysics. The mission of the Biophysical Society is to “advance the science of biophysics and promote its application”.

Biophysics is an interdisciplinary field that uses physics to understand and solve problems in biology. It is a relatively young field, but it has already made significant contributions to our understanding of living systems. For example, biophysicists have used X-ray crystallography to determine the structure of proteins, which has led to new insights into how these molecules work.Biophysicists are also using optical techniques to study cells and tissues, and this research is providing new information about how diseases develop and progress.

The Biophysical Society provides a forum for scientists working in all areas of biophysics to come together and share their work with others in the field. In addition to publishing the leading scientific journal in the field, the Society also holds an annual meeting that brings together more than 5,000 scientists from around the world. The meeting provides an opportunity for researchers to present their latest findings and discuss current challenges in biophysics.
