The Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) is a peer-reviewed general medical journal published by the Canadian Medical Association. It is one of the world’s leading medical journals, and publishes original research, reviews, editorials, and commentaries on all aspects of clinical practice, biomedical science, ethics, and health policy.
The CMAJ is widely considered to be a top medical journal, and it is ranked 4th out of 160 general medicine journals in terms of impact factor by the Thomson Reuters Journal Citation Reports. In addition, it is ranked 1st in Canada in terms of both impact factor and citation count.
The journal was established in 1867 as the Transactions of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. In 1903, it became the Canadian Medical Association Journal following a merger with the Canadian Medical Association’s own publication. The name was changed to its current form in 1998.
The CMAJ is published monthly by the Canadian Medical Association (CMA). It has a circulation of over 85000 copies per issue, making it one of the most widely circulated medical journals in the world. The journal is available both in print and online versions. The online version includes all content from back to 1998 – over 500000 articles total. All articles are free to access after 12 months from publication date.
