Ceres is a dwarf planet located in the asteroid belt, and was the first such body to be discovered. This world has a diameter of about 950 km, making it slightly smaller than our Moon. Ceres is also unique in that it contains a significant amount of water ice, which makes up about 25% of its mass. This surface feature gives Ceres a distinct appearance when viewed through Earth-based telescopes.
The 5 instruments on board the spacecraft are:
1) Framing Camera (FC)
2) Visible InfraRed Thermal Imaging Spectrometer (VIRTIS)
3) Near-Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (NIRMS)
4) Gravity Field and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) Payload
5) Dual Technique Magnetometer/Electron Reflectometer (MAG/ER).
