Founded in 1855 as the first hospital devoted exclusively to the care of children in the United States, The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia is a national leader in pediatric healthcare, education and research. A pioneer in patient care, CHOP has been at the forefront of medical breakthroughs and innovations for more than 160 years.
Located in West Philadelphia on a 34-acre campus, CHOP provides exceptional primary and specialty care to more than 1 million patients each year from across the country and around the world. The Hospital is one of only four Level I Pediatric Trauma Centers designated by Pennsylvania Department of Health and verified by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma. It also is home to one of only three Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) in Pennsylvania. In addition to its main campus, CHOP maintains a large network of primary care locations throughout Philadelphia as well as many satellite facilities throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
A team of more than 2,000 attending physicians — including nearly 400 full-time faculty members — along with an expert staff of nurses, child life specialists, social workers and other support personnel cares for patients at CHOP’s Main Campus and community practices. Our doctors are leaders in their fields and are actively involved in groundbreaking research that improves children’s health worldwide.
The Children’s Hospital Research Institute (CHRI) at CHOP ranks 3rd among all freestanding pediatric institutions for NIH funding awarded annually. With its strong basic science program complemented by translational clinical research initiatives, we are uniquely positioned to take discoveries made in our laboratories directly to patients through new diagnostic tools and treatments — something that few other institutions can boast.
As part of our commitment to improve children’s health locally and globally, we offer extensive training programs for medical students, residents, fellowships and postdoctoral positions; provide state-of-the-art continuing medical education courses for practicing physicians; host international visitors; collaborate with healthcare professionals worldwide; and much more.
