Co2 Emissions
A gas emissions from a variety of sources that contain the element carbon. Examples of these sources include, but are not limited to: power plants, automobiles, factories, and landfills. Co2 is considered a greenhouse gas because it contributes to the Earth’s natural greenhouse effect. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that approximately 82% of all greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. come from Co2 . Therefore, reducing Co2 emissions is critical to slowing down climate change.
There are a number of ways to reduce Co2 emissions. One way is by using cleaner burning fuels such as natural gas instead of coal to generate electricity. Another way is increased energy efficiency through better insulation and more efficient appliances and lighting. And finally, planting trees can help absorb some of the excess Co2 in the atmosphere (the process by which trees take in carbon dioxide and produce oxygen is called photosynthesis).
You can also play your part in reducing Co2 emissions by driving less, carpooling or taking public transportation when possible, recycling, composting organic waste instead of sending it to the landfill, and conserving energy at home and work. Every little bit helps!
