The Dunlap Institute for Astronomy & Astrophysics at the University of Toronto is an international centre for astronomical research and education, committed to excellence in both. The Dunlap Institute is funded by a generous donation from the Peter and Patricia Gruber Foundation, as well as by the Government of Canada through NSERC’s CREATE program.
The Dunlap Institute brings together over 100 astronomers, engineers and computer scientists from around the world to work on some of the most pressing problems in astrophysics today. Our goal is to advance humanity’s understanding of the Universe and our place within it.
We are working on a wide range of topics including: dark energy and dark matter; extrasolar planets; star formation; galaxy evolution; large-scale structure; cosmic magnetism; and time-domain astronomy. We are also developing new instrumentation and software for use in next-generation telescopes such as the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) and the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT).
In addition to our cutting-edge research, we are committed to training the next generation of astronomers and astrophysicists through our graduate programs, postdoctoral fellowships, undergraduate courses and public outreach initiatives.
