European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) is a world-leading synchrotron, based in Grenoble, France. It generates intense beams of x-rays and other forms of electromagnetic radiation, which are used by thousands of scientists each year for experiments in many different disciplines including biology, chemistry, earth sciences, engineering and materials science.
ESRF is one of the most productive scientific facilities in the world. In 2018 alone it welcomed over 5300 users from academia and industry who carried out almost 3300 experiments.
The facility is owned and operated by 22 member countries* through a joint company called ESRF SA. The annual operating budget is approximately €100 million.
