Idaho State University (ISU) is a public research university in Idaho. Founded in 1901, it is the state’s oldest and largest university. ISU offers more than 280 programs of study, including doctoral degrees in science and engineering. The main campus is located on 1,500 acres (6.1 km2) in Pocatello, with over 20,000 students attending classes each semester.
ISU has a long history of excellence in research and teaching. It was one of the first universities in the country to be accredited by the National Science Foundation, and its College of Engineering is consistently ranked among the nation’s top 50 programs by U.S. News & World Report. Additionally, ISU’s College of Pharmacy is the only pharmacy school in Idaho and one of only four colleges of pharmacy in the western United States that are accredited by the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education.
ISU supports a vibrant research enterprise through its many centers and institutes, including the Center for Advanced Energy Studies, Idaho Nanoscience Initiative, Institute for Bioinformatics and Evolutionary Studies, Materials Research Institute, and Plasma Physics Laboratory. These facilities attract leading scholars from around the world to collaborate with ISU faculty on cutting-edge research projects. In addition to basic research, ISU also conducts applied research that addresses real-world problems faced by businesses and industries in Idaho and beyond.
