Industrial Engineering is a branch of engineering that deals with the optimization of complex systems. It is concerned with the design, improvement and installation of systems that make it possible to produce goods and services efficiently and effectively. Industrial engineers work in a variety of industries, including manufacturing, healthcare, logistics, transportation and government.

The field of industrial engineering has its roots in the Industrial Revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries. During this time, factories began to spring up all over Europe and North America as businesses sought to capitalize on the new opportunities presented by mass production. As factories became more complex, so too did the process of designing them. This led to the development of industrial engineering principles – such as time-and-motion studies – which are still used today.

During the 20th century, industrial engineering underwent a period of rapid growth thanks to advances in technology and science. New tools and methods were developed that allowed for greater efficiency in manufacturing processes. The field also began to expand into other areas such as healthcare, transportation and logistics. Today, industrial engineers play an important role in many different industries around the world
