What is Learning?
Learning is the process of acquiring new or modifying existing knowledge, behaviors, skills, values, or preferences. The ability to learn is possessed by humans, animals, and some machines. Progress in machine learning has been driven by both theoretical understanding and engineering advances.
Theoretical understanding of how learning works has come from studies in neuroscience, psychology, ethology, epistemology, philosophy of mind, artificial intelligence (including deep learning), statistics, information theory and others. Engineering approaches have included algorithm design (including reinforcement learning), hardware design (e.g., neuromorphic chips), and applications to a variety of domains such as finance (algorithmic trading), health care (diagnosis and treatment planning), transportation (autonomous vehicles)
