Leiden University (abbreviated as UL; Dutch: Universiteit Leiden), located in the city of Leiden, is a public research university founded in 1575. It is one of Europe’s leading international research universities, and ranks within the top 100 worldwide.
The university has seven faculties: Archaeology, Arts and Culture Studies, Governance and Global Affairs, Law, Medicine, Science, Social and Behavioural Sciences. The university has over 1,800 scientists working across these disciplines who are engaged in cutting-edge research in fields such as nanotechnology, artificial intelligence, climate change and drug development.
In addition to its excellent reputation for research, Leiden University is also known for its high-quality teaching. The university offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes taught in English or Dutch by internationally renowned scholars.
Leiden University has a long tradition of exchange and collaboration with other leading universities around the world. The university currently has over 200 exchange agreements with institutions in more than 40 countries. This allows students to spend time studying abroad while still receiving their degree from Leiden University.
The campus of Leiden University is spread across the city centre of Leiden. The main campus is located on Rapenburg 70-73; this is where most of the faculty buildings are situated as well as the central library (the Boerhaavebibliotheek) and student accommodation. Other parts of the university are located on Witte Singel (including the Academy Building), Steenschuur 25 (the Kamerlingh Onnes Laboratory) and Einsteinweg 2 (the LUMC).
