The Medical University of South Carolina is a public research university in Charleston, South Carolina. Founded in 1824, MUSC is the oldest medical school in the state and the fourth oldest continuously operating medical school in the United States. MUSC College of Medicine trains future physicians and other health care professionals, conducts cutting-edge biomedical research and provides patient care services to the citizens of South Carolina and beyond. The main campus comprises nine buildings clustered around a central quadrangle on Marion Square in downtown Charleston.
In addition to its main campus in downtown Charleston, the university has several satellite campuses throughout the state. The Ashley River Tower (ART) houses MUSC’s Children’s Hospital, Shawn Jenkins Children’s Institute, Women’s Health Center, intensive care units for infants and children, as well as many adult outpatient services. The Hollings Cancer Center is also located at ART. MUSC operates a 700-bed medical center which includes Level I trauma center and America’s only freestanding children’s hospital – all located on its main campus near downtown Charleston.
