National Taiwan University is located in Taipei, Taiwan. It was founded in 1928 and is the largest university in Taiwan with over 30,000 students. The university is organized into 11 colleges and 56 departments, offering bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. NTU is one of the top research universities in Taiwan and its main campus covers over 160 hectares.
NTU was originally established as Taihoku Imperial University during Japanese rule of Taiwan (1895-1945). When Japan lost control of Taiwan after World War II, the Republic of China took over and renamed the school National Taiwan University. Since then, NTU has played a leading role in developing higher education on the island. In recent years, it has also become a major center for international students from around Asia.
NTU’s main campus is situated in a beautiful natural setting at the base of Yangmingshan Mountain. The campus features several traditional Chinese gardens as well as modern buildings and facilities. NTU also operates branch campuses in Keelung and Hsinchu City, as well as a hospital and numerous research institutes.
The university offers a wide range of programs at all levels of study. Its undergraduate programs are among the most competitive in Taiwan, with admission rates often below 10%. Notable graduate programs include those in engineering, business administration, law, and medicine. Research at NTU is conducted across a broad range of disciplines including engineering, life sciences, social sciences, humanities, and more. In recent years NTU has been ranked among the world’s top 100 universities by several major international rankings organizations.
