The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) is a world-leading centre of excellence in environmental science. NERC funds and carries out leading-edge research, training and innovation in the environmental sciences to help society understand and respond to global environmental change. The organisation is headquartered in Swindon, United Kingdom.

NERC was established in 1965 as a statutory body under the Science and Technology Act 1965. In addition to funding research, NERC also provides advice on environmental issues to government departments, non-governmental organisations and businesses. It also disseminates its findings to the public through publications, websites and educational outreach programmes.

The council is governed by a board of trustees, which currently comprises 14 members drawn from academia, business, government and the third sector.
