New York is a state located in the Northeastern United States. As of 2018, New York has an estimated population of 19,542,209, which makes it the fourth most populous state in the country. The state’s capital is Albany and its largest city is New York City.
The area that would become New York was first settled by Native Americans around 10,000 BC. In the 17th century, Dutch settlers established the colony of New Netherland on Manhattan Island. In 1664, England conquered the area and renamed it New York after the Duke of York. The state became one of the thirteen colonies that took part in the American Revolution and ultimately joined the Union as one of its original thirteen states.
New York City served as the capital of both United States and Confederate States during parts of the Civil War. Afterward it became a major transportation hub and a center for finance and commerce. The opening of the Erie Canal in 1825 made New York City America’s primary port, and helped to solidify its position as a leading global city. Today, NYC is home to some of America’s most iconic landmarks, including Times Square, Central Park, Wall Street, and Broadway.
New York State is often referred to as “the Empire State” due to its vast size and economic power. It is home to many Fortune 500 companies headquarters, as well numerous world-renowned cultural institutions such as Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. The state also boasts natural beauty in Niagara Falls and Adirondack Park.
