For example, they help control soil erosion by stabilizing soils with their roots; they provide food and habitat for many animals; and they improve water quality by filtering pollutants out of the water as it passes through their leaves.
Despite their importance, plants are often understudied compared to other groups of organisms. This is because plants are generally stationary (they can’t move around to find new environments), so they can’t escape from unfavorable conditions or predators as easily as animals can. Additionally, because most plants grow very slowly compared to animals (a tree may take decades to reach its full size), it can be difficult to observe plant development over time.
