Riken Advanced Science Institute ( commonly referred to as RIKEN) is a large, comprehensive research institute located in Japan. Founded in 1917, it is one of the largest and most respected research institutes in the world. RIKEN conducts basic and applied research across a wide range of disciplines, including physics, chemistry, biology, medical science and engineering. It also has a strong focus on interdisciplinary research and collaborative projects with industry and other academic institutions.
RIKEN has a highly international outlook, with around 30% of its researchers coming from outside Japan. It offers excellent working conditions and facilities for its staff, including on-site childcare and housing options. The institute also supports early career researchers through its postdoctoral fellowship program.
RIKEN’s main campus is located in Wako, just outside Tokyo. It also has several branch campuses across Japan, as well as international centers in the US, UK and China.
Research at RIKEN covers a wide range of topics, from fundamental studies of matter and energy to practical applications in health care and information technology. Recent breakthroughs include the development of an “artificial nose” that can detect explosives; new materials for lithium-ion batteries; and treatments for Parkinson’s disease using stem cells.
With over 3200 researchers working across its various departments and centers, RIKEN is one of the leading scientific institutes in the world today.
