Shinshu University (信州大学, Shinshū daigaku) is a public university in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. The main campus is located in the city of Matsumoto, with additional campuses in the cities of Karuizawa and Ueda. The university was established in 1949 as Matsumoto Dental College, and became a full-fledged university in 1963. It is one of only two national universities in Japan with a focus on dentistry (the other being Meikai University).
As of 2020, the university comprises 12 faculties and 19 graduate schools. The student body consists of around 7,700 undergraduates and 2,200 graduate students. International students come from all over the world to study at Shinshu University; as of 2019 there were approximately 300 international students enrolled at the university.
The research conducted at Shinshu University covers a wide range of fields including dentistry, medicine, pharmaceutical sciences, engineering, agriculture, liberal arts, and management. In recent years the university has been successful in attracting research funding from both private companies and government organizations. As of 2020, the total amount of research funding received by Shinshu University was ¥10 billion (approximately US$93 million).
The university has numerous facilities for its students and staff, including libraries, computer labs, sports facilities, and on-campus housing. There are also several museums on campus: the Matsumoto City Museum (松本市立美術館), which showcases works by local artists; the Nagano Prefectural Museum (長野県立歴史民俗博物館), which displays artifacts from Nagano’s history; and the Ueda Bunko Museum (上田文庫資料館), which houses a collection of rare books donated by author Kenzaburō Ōe.
