Smilodon ( /ˈsmɪlədɒn/; meaning “knife tooth”) is a genus of the extinct felid subfamily Machairodontinae, endemic to North and South America during the Pleistocene epoch (2.5 mya–10,000 years ago). It was the most common machairodont at the time. Although commonly known as the saber-toothed tiger, it was not closely related to other tigers. Smilodon populator was among the largest felids that ever lived; male individuals reached weights exceeding 400 kg (880 lb).
