A social group is a collection of individuals who interact with one another and share a common identity. For instance, we might feel obligated to dress a certain way or behave in a certain manner when we are at work because that is what is considered “normal” within that particular workplace culture.
There are also many benefits that come from being a member of a social group. For instance,social groups can provide individuals with support during difficult times (e.g., divorce), assistance with tasks (e.g., childcare), and companionship (e.g., going on vacation). Additionally, membership in a social group can offer opportunities for personal growth and development (e.g., taking on new roles and responsibilities). Finally, being part of a social group can simply be enjoyable – it provides us with people to talk to, laugh with, and enjoy life experiences with!
