Tokyo Metropolitan University (東京都立大学, Tōkyō Toritsu Daigaku), also known as TMU or Tokyo Met, is a Japanese public university located in Hachioji, Tokyo. The main campus is situated on the hillside of Otsuka-machi.
Tokyo Metropolitan University was established in 1949 as the Tokyo Metropolitan Higher Technical School (東京都立高等工芸館). In 1964 it became one of the first public universities in Japan and was renamed to its current name. Since its establishment, the university has expanded its programs and now comprises 10 schools and departments offering courses in engineering, science, architecture, medicine and more. The university also has 5 affiliated research institutes.
TMU places great importance on internationalization and currently has partnerships with over 400 universities worldwide. It also offers various international programs which allow students to study abroad for a semester or two. These programs are available not only to Japanese students but also to international students from partner universities.
