The University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences has a long tradition of excellence in medical education, research, and patient care. The school was founded in 1846 as the Medical Department of the University of Buffalo. It was one of the first schools west of the Allegheny Mountains to offer a full four-year course of study leading to the MD degree. In 1893, the school became an independent entity within the university known as the State University College of Medicine. In 1962, it merged with what is now Erie County Medical Center to form SUNY Upstate Medical University. In 1998, Upstate joined with SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse to create SUNY Upstate Medical University, which today comprises eight colleges: Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital; Upstate Cancer Center; College Of Nursing; College Of Health Professions; Graduate School OfBiomedical Sciences; School Of Medicine; And Biomedical Engineering & Bioinformatics (BE&B).
The school offers a rich array of degree programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Undergraduate students can pursue a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences with a concentration in either Pre-Medical Studies or Allied Health Professions Studies. The school also offers several combined BS/MD programs that allow students to complete their undergraduate studies and earn their MD degrees in six or seven years instead of the traditional eight years.
Graduate students can pursue masters degrees or PhDs in areas such as Anatomy & Cell Biology, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Pharmacology & Toxicology, Physiology & Biophysics ,and more . The school also offers several joint degree programs ,such as MD/PhD , DO/MPH ,and JD/MPH .
