NASA is inviting everyone to join its groundbreaking Lucy mission and create their own time capsule! For the first time ever, the public can partake in a mission to explore one main belt asteroid and seven Trojan asteroids, located between Jupiter and Mars. NASA is giving us the chance to make memories last in the form of a personal Lucy Time Capsule. Anyone can add objects, sounds, ideas or words to their very own Lucy Time Capsule that capture the moment of 202

Make Memories Last

Creating a time capsule to commemorate the launch of the Lucy mission is an exciting opportunity. The Lucy mission is a first-of-its-kind project launching in the near future, so making a Lucy Time Capsule is a great way to capture and remember this momentous event. To start, use a reusable container with a top to store your items – choose one that suits your needs, such as a shoebox, a tennis ball canister, or a freezer bag.

When it comes to deciding what to put in your capsule, think about items that will remind the owner of the year that Lucy launches. It’s important to choose items that are special, meaningful and symbolic of the year in which Lucy launches. So if you’re looking for ideas on what you can add in your time capsule, here are some suggestions:

  • Currencies – include coins and bills specific to the year Lucy launches
  • Gadgets – add technological devices popular during the year of launch
  • Photos – collect photos of friends and family members just before the launch
  • Maps and documents – include important documents related to the mission
  • Artifacts – add artifacts related to current popular culture or significant events
  • News articles – add newspaper clippings and magazine articles related to the mission
  • Letters and cards – include letters from family members or from people associated with the mission

Once you have all these items collected, it’s time to seal up your time capsule! You must make sure your time capsule is airtight and waterproof, so that it won’t get damaged over time. A great way to do this is by using an adhesive to seal any openings or weak spots. Keep track of where you store your time capsule as well as when it should be opened – date it so that you don’t forget when you should open it. With your Lucy Time Capsule completed, it’s now time for the next step – showing it off to NASA!

Lucy Mission
This diagram illustrates Lucy’s orbital path. The spacecraft’s path (green) is shown in a frame of reference where Jupiter remains stationary, giving the trajectory its pretzel-like shape. After launch in October 2021, Lucy has two close Earth flybys before encountering its Trojan targets. In the L4 cloud Lucy will fly by (3548) Eurybates (white) and its satellite, (15094) Polymele (pink), (11351) Leucus (red), and (21900) Orus (red) from 2027-2028. After diving past Earth again Lucy will visit the L5 cloud and encounter the (617) Patroclus-Menoetius binary (pink) in 2033. As a bonus, in 2025 on the way to the L4, Lucy flies by a small Main Belt asteroid, (52246) Donaldjohanson (white), named for the discoverer of the Lucy fossil. After flying by the Patroclus-Menoetius binary in 2033, Lucy will continue cycling between the two Trojan clouds every six years.

Share the Special

In addition to building your own time capsule, don’t forget to show off your own Lucy Time Capsule to NASA and the world. After creating something special, there is no better way to share it with the world than through social media. You can post your Lucy Time Capsule on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, or any other social platform you prefer.

When posting your Lucy Time Capsule, don’t forget to include a hashtag of #LucyTimeCapsule so that people can easily find your post. You can also post photos, drawings, and video clips of your time capsule for others to see. When sharing your posts on social media, you may even have the chance of having it featured on NASA’s official accounts.

If you are looking for some ideas for what you can include in your post about your Lucy Time Capsule, consider writing out a few words of wisdom that have been meaningful to you or have been passed down from generation to generation in your family. You can also include messages of hope or quotes that would be meaningful to the world. Whatever content you choose to share will be appreciated by many!

So join the Lucy Mission now and create something truly special that you can show off on social media! By tagging #LucyTimeCapsule on your post, people all over the world can get inspired and be part of this historic mission as well.

Transcending Time

The Lucy mission is carrying a plaque with quotes, poems, song lyrics and other messages inscribed on it. This plaque will remain in space travelling between Earth and the Trojan asteroids for potentially millions of years. It’s an amazing thought that descendants of humanity may one day retrieve the spacecraft and receive these messages from generations of the past.

To join in this cosmic conversation, everyone can create their own “time capsule” by writing down a message to their future self in the form of a letter. This can be anything from your thoughts and feelings about life right now to your goals, dreams, and expectations for the next few years. Participants can store the letter in a shoebox or on the outside of the box, just like a plaque. The Lucy mission encourages everyone to come up with creative ways to preserve their messages so that they will still be around in centuries to come.

People around the world are coming together to share the words they want to leave behind — this is something special that even the Lucy mission cannot do. For example, students at an elementary school in Arizona wrote down stories of resilience and hope that were adapted into a poem for inclusion on the spacecraft. Similarly, a high school class in New York crafted a message that inspired everyone to believe in themselves and never give up.

By taking part in NASA’s Lucy mission and creating our own time capsules, we’re leaving something behind for future generations. We’re able to put our words out there for others to hear when we no longer can. That’s special — something that will last for ages. Join us as we unite to write down our messages for immortality!

Don’t Miss the Opportunity to Add Special Items to Your Lucy Time Capsule!

If you’re taking part in NASA’s Lucy Trojan asteroid mission, you should consider revisiting your time capsule and adding something new to mark mission milestones. The mission is set to launch in October of 2022 and will take place over the course of 8 years until it completes its last flyby of the Donaldjohanson and Polymele asteroids in December 2030. This is a long time period that can provide you with lots of opportunities to add special items to your Lucy Time Capsule.

It is highly recommended that you mark these milestone dates on your calendar so that you don’t forget to add something new to your Lucy Time Capsule. These dates include: October 15, 2022, when the mission first launches; as well as December 25, 2030 when it completes its last flyby of the two Trojan asteroids.

It can also be a fun social media activity! You can post pictures or videos of what you’ve added to your Lucy Time Capsule on platforms like Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #LucyTimeCapsule. Then people from all around the world can connect with you and join in on the conversation about the Lucy Mission and its scientific findings.

After Lucy flies by the two Trojan asteroids, Donaldjohanson and Polymele, it will continue to orbit around the Sun and pass through the Trojan swarms at Jupiter’s L4 and L5 points eight more times over the course of 8 years. During each flyby, you can record any significant findings or discoveries made during that specific mission cycle.

At the end of each flyby, take some time to review everything you have added to your Lucy Time Capsule up until that point. Think about what else could be included to tell a complete story about this mission’s historical impact on humanity. Then add something meaningful or symbolic to commemorate this extraordinary event.

In joining the NASA Lucy mission, you have a unique and special opportunity to create your own time capsule and make memories last. By adding special items to your time capsule, you’ll be able to share these memories with future generations, transcending time and space. Don’t miss out on this chance to create a lasting legacy! Join the Lucy mission today and make memories to last a lifetime.
