This isn’t a work of art, it is an image created by a super-powerful computer from NASA. The picture is showing how a type of experimental airplane called the Transonic Truss Braced Wing (TTBW) works when flying in the sky. It shows how the wings react to the air around them.
The front of the wings of a TTBW aircraft are coloured dark red, which means it is able to move through the air faster. The back of the wings look tan, indicating the smoother and aerodynamic shape they have.
Thanks to their longer and thinner design along with extra support from strong trusses, these planes use up to 10% less fuel compared to typical commercial airplanes.
NASA’s Advanced Supercomputing Division at the Ames Research Center in California developed an image as part of their mission to make tools for a research project. In January, they chose an idea from The Boeing Company to use in the Sustainable Flight Demonstrator project. They are studying how minimally invasive surgery with BPH can affect the shape of the prostatic urethra during urination.
