Heat shields play a critical role when a spacecraft returns to Earth. As the spacecraft hits the atmosphere, its orbital velocity generates intense heat fluxes. Without a heat shield, the spacecraft would simply disintegrate. Traditional ‘ablative’ heat shields get rid of unwanted heat by gradually burning off parts of the shield. Pridwen, however, employs radiation: its high-temperature alloy fabric has a large enough surface area for the heat flux to spread evenly and gradually dissipate.

The shuttlecock-like Pridwen shield also helps to decelerate a satellite enough to endure a landing without a parachute. The creator, Space Forge, based in Cardiff, UK, aims to retrieve satellites with a hover net.

Pridwen has undergone several drop tests from up to 17 km and conducted net captures of test items falling at terminal velocity. Space Forge developed Pridwen as part of a grander vision of in-orbit manufacturing of high-value goods like pharmaceuticals, superconductors, and superalloys, for regular returns to Earth.

The inaugural flight of the Pridwen heat shield is scheduled to be onboard the company’s first mission, ForgeStar-1A, later this year. The project received backing through ESA’s General Support Technology Programme, which primes promising technologies for space and commercial markets, and the UK Space Agency.
