Negative Emotions Can Lead to Success – But At What Cost?

A research team from The University of Essex did a study in multiple countries, and discovered that if you use anxious or angry feelings, it might help you do well in things. However, this can have an effect on your health. The study was looking into how the brain works when we get “achievement emotions”.

A new study, published in a scientific journal called the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, has discovered that there are twelve different emotions which can help people to become successful. Even though anxiety and anger seem bad on the surface, they can actually act like fuel or motivation to achieve success, just like hope and enjoyment.

If you’re feeling down, it may be because of stress or bad physical health like headaches, stomachaches, back pain and not being able to sleep. The good news is that hope can make us feel better — when we think positively and stay in control we experience more pleasure from learning, want to succeed more, and take pride in our accomplishments.

A new study found that if two people with the same skills take a test, the one with a positive attitude will do better. The more hopeful person would get a C while the less optimistic student would get a D – which is like failing. Professor Reinhard Pekrun from Essex’s Department of Psychology said it was the first research to build a 3D model around success emotions.

This model might not make sense right away, but it explains how emotions associated with success factor into our lives. It means that what we feel, like anxiety and anger, can affect how well we do in job interviews or taking tests. Surprisingly, those feelings can help us more than enjoying something or feeling relaxed.

He said that even though feeling anxious can give you energy, it can have negative impacts on your mental health and make it hard for your body to fight off illness. He also said that hope is the most helpful way to be successful and have a long-term happy life. Lastly, he pointed out that it’s not the failure itself that counts but how we react when we fail which really affects our emotions.

The psychological study involved students from universities and the general adult population from four different countries, which are Britain, Germany, America and Canada. More than 1,000 people were looked at by researchers during this study in both university and workplace settings. The overall goal of this research is to help coaches, teachers and managers motivate others to achieve their goals.

The study found that it might be useful for leaders to act excited in order to motivate the people they are leading, like colleagues, students or athletes. Encouraging everyone instead of emphasizing winning is more likely to lead to better results.
