Aaas, also known as the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing science for the benefit of humanity. Founded in 1848 and headquartered in Washington, DC, AAAS is the world’s largest multidisciplinary scientific society. Its mission is to “advance science, engineering and innovation throughout the world for the betterment of all people.”
The main purpose of AAAS is to promote collaboration among scientists from different disciplines and countries around issues related to science policy, education and research. It works closely with governments at both national and international levels on matters such as climate change; access to health care; energy efficiency; food security; water quality; biodiversity conservation and more. Moreover, it provides resources such as grants, fellowships and awards that support cutting-edge scientific research across a wide range of fields.
In addition to its work promoting public engagement with science through initiatives like Science & Technology Policy Fellowships Program or Dialogue on Science Ethics & Religion (DoSER), AAAS also publishes several prestigious journals including Science magazine—the premier journal in its field since 1880—and serves members via career services programs like Career Pathways Fellowship Program or Women’s Mentoring Network (WMN). These publications offer not only peer reviewed original research but also features pieces that explore topics ranging from global health crises such as obesity epidemic or pandemic influenza outbreaks to ethical debates surrounding stem cell technologies or genetic engineering techniques.
Finally, AAAS holds an annual meeting which brings together thousands of researchers from around the globe who present their findings in various disciplines over four days each February/March . At this conference participants have opportunity not only discuss latest developments in respective fields but also engage with policymakers about how these new discoveries can be applied directly into practice .
