Academy of Finland
The Academy of Finland is a research and funding organization in Finland. It was founded in 1927, originally as the Finnish Academy for Science and Letters, making it one of the oldest research organizations in Europe. The mission of the Academy is to support high-level scientific research and promote science-based development through its activities. The Academy’s main sources of income are government appropriations and various EU programmes such as Horizon 2020.
The Academy has four strategic goals: (1) to strengthen excellence in research, (2) to foster collaboration between researchers across disciplines and sectors, (3) to ensure that scientific knowledge is used effectively in society, and (4) to contribute actively to internationalisation within higher education institutions in order that they can better compete globally. To achieve these goals the academy provides grants for individual researchers such as postdocs or professorships; awards prizes such as annual Science Awards; supports networks for interdisciplinary exchange; offers training programmes for young scientists; organises summer schools on topical issues related to science policy or technology transfer; publishes reports on current topics related to science policy which are made available online; works closely with other national academies around the world on joint projects or initiatives like Global Young Academics Networking Initiative -GYANI-, aimed at connecting early career researchers from different countries worldwide so they can share their experiences and collaborate more easily; runs an open access publishing platform – Avoin Yliopisto– providing free access to academic publications written by members of universities throughout Finland.; finally it also contributes actively towards public engagement about science through campaigns like “Science Explorers” where primary school children have direct contact with scientists working on exciting projects!
In conclusion, the activities carried out by The Academy Of Finland have a positive impact not only nationally but internationally too since many collaborations take place thanks precisely this organization’s efforts.
