Amazon
The Amazon is the world’s largest and most biodiverse tropical rainforest. It is located in South America, covering an area of more than 5.5 million square kilometers (2.1 million square miles). This region consists of nine countries: Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana. The Amazon River is the second longest river in the world and runs through this vast region providing essential nutrients to its diverse ecosystem. It also serves as a major transportation route for goods between coastal cities and hinterland towns.
The Amazon is home to an incredible variety of plants and animals; its lush vegetation contains around 40 000 species of plants alone! Among these are some iconic species such as jaguars, colorful macaws and giant anteaters.
