Founded in 1948 as the American Neurological Association, it was renamed the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) in 1965.

The AAN is composed of over 36,000 members from around the world who are dedicated to improving treatments for neurological diseases and disorders through clinical practice, teaching and research. The organization offers its members access to cutting-edge educational resources such as continuing medical education courses and webinars; opportunities to participate in clinical trials; scientific journals such as Neurology® and Neuroimaging Clinics of North America™; policy advocacy initiatives; peer-reviewed grants programs that award up to $1 million annually for innovative projects; awards recognizing outstanding achievements within neurology; leadership development programs; collaborative networks with other specialties throughout medicine including psychiatry, rehabilitation medicine, pediatric neurology and geriatric neurology among others.

In addition, the AAN hosts an annual scientific meeting each spring that brings together thousands of clinicians from around the globe with renowned researchers presenting their latest findings on state-of-the art advances across all areas of neuroscience. Through this gathering, attendees receive specialized training on diagnosis techniques while discussing emerging therapies available today or being explored as potential treatments tomorrow. This event also serves as a platform for collaboration between scientists working on similar topics or studying different aspects related to one major area so they can share ideas which may lead them down new paths towards breakthroughs in understanding neurological disease processes better than ever before.

Finally, since 2005 AAN has had its own foundation called “The Brain Foundation” established specifically for funding research into ways we can prevent brain diseases like Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s but also providing support services those affected by these conditions already suffer from now. The Brain Foundation has been instrumental not only financially supporting groundbreaking work conducted at institutions across North America but also helping create more awareness about these illnesses so people become more conscious about early detection methods which would improve chances successful interventions should any symptoms appear later down life’s path . All this demonstrates how much effort goes into making sure everyone has access top quality healthcare regardless if they have means get it when needed most!
