The American Society for Horticultural Science (ASHS) is a professional organization dedicated to advancing horticulture and its related disciplines. Founded in 1903, ASHS has grown into the largest professional society in the United States devoted exclusively to horticulture. It provides scientific knowledge and expertise on topics ranging from plant breeding to landscape design, from pest management to urban gardening. The mission of the organization is “to promote and encourage research, education, and extension programs in all aspects of horticultural science”

History of ASHS
The American Society for Horticultural Science was founded as the American Pomological Society at Purdue University in West Lafayette Indiana on January 19th 1903 by Professor William A. Spillman with 25 charter members from across eight states representing twelve colleges or universities. In 1945 it changed its name to the current title: “American Society For Horticultural Science” reflecting a more broadened scope of services beyond pomology (the science of fruit production). As early as 1914 there were international members which eventually led up 1944 when an international division was created that now includes members outside North America who are still able share information through meetings such as their annual conference held annually since 1916 with some exceptions due to World War II or other conflicts that may arise throughout time.
