Bats are the only flying mammals. They are found on every continent except for Antarctica and South America. There are about 1,300 species of bats, more than any other mammal group. Bats range in size from the largest, the Old World fruit bat, to the smallest, the Kitti’s hog-nosed bat, which is no bigger than a bumblebee.
Bats play an important role in many ecosystems. They pollinate plants and disperse seeds. They eat insects, some of which are considered pests. And they serve as food for other animals, including humans in some cultures.
Bats have long been associated with spookiness and mystery. But there is nothing scary about these fascinating creatures!
