BBRI was founded in 1989 by Dr. Antoni Esteve, who served as its director until his retirement in 2014. Under Dr. Esteve’s leadership, BBRI became one of the leading centers for biomedical research in Europe. The institute is home to over 500 scientists from more than 30 countries. They are engaged in a wide range of basic, clinical, and translational research programs that focus on several major diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease.

The institute has state-of-the-art facilities for cell and molecular biology, animal experimentation, medical imaging, and genomics. It also houses a new Center for Personalized Medicine that provides genomic sequencing services to patients with rare diseases. In recent years, BBRI has been at the forefront of developing new treatments for cancer and other diseases using nanotechnology and regenerative medicine approaches.

The institute offers graduate programs in biomedicine and health sciences that train students from around the world to become tomorrow’s leaders in biomedical research and healthcare. BBRI also hosts numerous conferences and symposia each year that bring together scientists from all over the world to discuss cutting-edge research findings and advances in medical care
