In 1882 the college relocated to Cleveland after receiving a significant financial gift from Leopold Case – an inventor and businessman – which allowed for further expansion. At this time it also changed its name to Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) as a way to honour its benefactor’s generosity.

Today CWRU is widely recognized as being one of America’s leading research universities with particular strengths in areas such as biomedicine , health care , management , materials science , mathematics , physics , social work and sociology .
