The Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH) is a world-leading scientific organisation that undertakes research, monitoring and training in terrestrial, freshwater and atmospheric ecosystems and their interactions with the environment. CEH is part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC).
CEH science helps policy-makers and practitioners to conserve and enhance the natural environment for the benefit of biodiversity, ecosystem services and human well-being. We work closely with government agencies, NGOs, businesses and land managers to ensure our science informs decision making at all levels.
CEH has a long history of excellence in ecological and hydrological science. We have played a leading role in developing our understanding of how environmental change affects ecosystems, water resources and air quality. Our work on acid rain led to UK legislation to reduce emissions of sulphur dioxide, while our research on flood risk has contributed to improved flood management practices across Europe. More recently, our contributions to knowledge about the effects of pollutants on bees and other pollinators has influenced European Union policy on pesticide use.
CEH operates from four main sites – Windermere in Cumbria; Wallingford in Oxfordshire; Bangor in Wales; and Edinburgh – as well as from dozens of smaller field stations across the UK. We employ over 400 scientists, technicians and support staff, who are organised into five Science Directorates: Atmosphere; Terrestrial Climate Change & Ecosystems; Land Use Change & Soils; Water Resources & Aquatic Biodiversity;and Freshwater Ecology & Evolutionary Biology.
