Chalmers University of Technology ( Chalmers tekniska högskola in Swedish) is a Swedish university located in Gothenburg that focuses on research and education in technology, science, engineering and maritime sciences. The university was founded in 1829 following a donation by William Chalmers, a director of the Bank of Sweden, making it one of the oldest technical universities in Sweden. In 2017, Chalmers had 13106 full-time students enrolled and employed around 1680 faculty and other staff.
The current president of Chalmers is Stefan Bengtsson. The main campus is located on Gårda, about 5 minutes’ walk from Chalmersplatsen and Gothenburg Central Station. Most departments are within walking distance of each other; the Department for Applied Physics being the furthest away at about 20 minutes’ walk north from the main campus. Research groups are based both on the campuses and within companies or institutions all over Gothenburg’s metropolitan area such as Sahlgrenska University Hospital and Volvo Cars Corporation.
The three academic units – Department of Architecture, Civil Engineering & Geosciences; Department Electrical Engineering & Computer Science; Department Industrial & Materials Science – are headed by deans who report directly to the president. Each department consists of different subject areas which offer courses at both undergraduate (Bachelor’s level) as well as graduate (Master’s level) levels. All education at Chalmers is project based learning with an emphasis placed on student independence during their studies – often involving close cooperation with industry partners or other universities both nationally and internationally throughout Europe under Erasmus agreements or similar programs..
