Charles Darwin (1809-1882) was an English naturalist and geologist who is best known for his work on the theory of evolution. In 1859, he published On the Origin of Species, which proposed that all life on Earth had descended from a common ancestor. This theory helped to explain how species could change over time, and it became the foundation for modern evolutionary biology.

Darwin was born in Shrewsbury, England, on February 12, 1809. His father was a doctor, and his grandfather was the famous scientist Erasmus Darwin. From a young age, Charles showed an interest in nature and science. He attended medical school for a brief time but eventually dropped out to pursue his interests in natural history.

In 1831, Darwin embarked on a five-year voyage around the world on the HMS Beagle. During this trip, he made extensive observations of plants and animals in different parts of the world. These observations would later prove important to his work on evolution.

Upon his return to England in 1836, Darwin began working on his theory of evolution by Natural Selection. He continued to refine this theory over the next 20 years while also conducting other research projects on topics such as barnacle anatomy and earthworms. In 1858, he finally presented his ideas on evolution in a joint paper with Alfred Russel Wallace entitled “On the Tendency of Varieties to Depart Indefinitely from the Original Type”. The following year saw the publication of On the Origin of Species, which quickly gained notoriety and sparked debate among scientists and laypeople alike.

Despite initial resistance from some quarters, Darwin’s theory of evolution eventually came to be widely accepted as one of the most important scientific discoveries of all time. Today, Darwin is celebrated as one of history’s most influential thinkers, and his work continues to shape our understanding of life on Earth
