The College of Environmental Science and Forestry (CESF) is one of the oldest environment and forestry schools in the United States. It was founded in 1911 as the New York State School of Forestry at Syracuse University, making it the first institution in the country offering a professional degree in forestry. In 1925, it became part of the SUNY system and changed its name to the College of Environmental Science and Forestry. The college offers undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degrees in a variety of environmental science and forestry disciplines.
The CESF has always been at the forefront of environmental research and education. Its faculty are leaders in their fields, conducting groundbreaking research on topics such as forest ecology, sustainable management practices, air quality, climate change, energy development, water resources, solid waste management, and more. The college’s extensive forests provide an important outdoor laboratory for students and faculty alike to study forest ecosystems up close. In addition to academic programs, CESF also runs a number of outreach initiatives aimed at educating people about environmental issues and promoting sustainable living practices.
As one of only two institutions in New York State with accredited programs in both environmental science and forestry (the other being Cornell University), CESF is uniquely positioned to prepare students for careers in these rapidly growing fields. With an increasing focus on sustainability across all sectors of society – from business to government to nonprofits – there is a growing demand for professionals with training in both natural sciences and social sciences who can help organizations develop policies and practices that are environmentally responsible AND economically viable.
CESF graduates go on to work in a variety of positions within government agencies, private companies, NGOs ,and more; many also continue their studies at the graduate or doctoral level. No matter what path they choose after graduation though ,all CESF alumni share a commitment to protecting our planet’s natural resources through their work .
