Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is a rare, fatal degenerative brain disorder. It is characterized by rapidly progressive dementia and neurological deterioration. CJD typically affects people over the age of 60, but can occur in younger individuals. The cause of CJD is unknown, but it is believed to be caused by abnormal proteins called prions. Prions are found in the brains of people with CJD and are thought to cause the disease by causing normal proteins to change shape and function abnormally. There is no cure for CJD and it is always fatal. Treatment focuses on relieving symptoms and providing supportive care.
