Endophytes are microorganisms that live within the tissues of plants. They can be bacteria, fungi, or viruses. Most endophytes are beneficial to their plant hosts, providing them with nutrients, protecting them from pathogens, or helping them tolerate environmental stressors. Some endophytes can cause disease in plants, however.
