Florida International University is a public research university in Greater Miami, Florida. FIU has two major campuses in Miami-Dade County, with its main campus in University Park and the Biscayne Bay Campus in North Miami.

FIU is categorized as a Doctoral/Research University by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. It is also one of 66 public research universities that belong to the Association of American Universities. The university offers 191 programs of study leading to bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral, and professional degrees. FIU awards more than 3,400 degrees each year.

The university has a large number of international students, totaling 8 percent of the student body. In 2013, FIU ranked sixth among U.S. News & World Report’s Top 10 Most Popular Universities for International Students list and was designated a “Best Value” school by Kiplinger magazine. In 2017, 47 percent of incoming freshmen at FIU were from Florida; however, out-of-state and international students made up 51 percent of freshman enrollment. More than 15 percent of FIU’s undergraduate students are members of minority groups.

Florida International University was founded on May 3 1965 as part os State Board os Education’s plan to expand access to higher education in South Floria Os these first few years it existed only on paper until it opened its doors to 524 undergraduates and 29 graduate students at an old World War II airstrip Hialeah-Miami Springs Airport The establishment os an upper division college at this time allowed many local residents who had attended junior colleges elsewhere complete their Bachelor’s degree without having to leave home The decision to build an entirely new university rather than convert existing institutions was strongly supported by then Dade County Junior College District Board Chairman Chuck Perry With initial support from the Legislature Governor Claude R Kirk Jr approved bonds for construction which began on March 11 1968 The first commencement exercises were held on June 14 1970 with 148 graduates Since then nearly 200000 alumni have received degrees from Florida International University In September 1972 less than three years after opening its doors temporary facilities housed at Tamiami Airport became inadequate for continuing operations As a resultFIU moved permanently to its current site eleven miles southwest at what is now known as West Dade One thousand acres straddling both sides US Highway 27 offer ample room for future expansion This land once contained rock pits used during construction os Interstate 75 which bisects campus today Along with growth came recognition An early indication came when President Nixon visited campus during his 1972 reelection campaign He said “I believe that if you give young people half a chance they will surprise you every time” Later accolades included being named “One os America’s Greatest 100 Colleges” by Time magazine “Most Improved Large Public University” according To U S News World Report and “School os Opportunity” By Newsweek Today our commitment offering quality affordable education close remain strong as ever We invite you join us building even brighter tomorrow
