Homo Sapiens

Homo sapiens is the scientific name for the human species. The first Homo sapiens were probably born about 200,000 years ago in Africa. Homo sapiens are now the only surviving members of the genus Homo. All other members of this genus (such as Homo erectus and Homo neanderthalensis) are now extinct.

Homo sapiens are a very successful species. They have spread to all parts of the world and their numbers continue to grow. This success is due to many things, including:

-The ability to make and use tools
-The ability to communicate using language
-A capacity for abstract thought and creativity

Homo sapiens have a long life span compared to other animals. The average lifespan is about 70 years, but some people live much longer – up to 120 years or more. This long life span means that each individual can learn a lot during their lifetime and pass this knowledge on to others. This accumulation of knowledge has led to huge advances in science, technology and medicine over the last few thousand years.
