The Institute for Basic Science (IBS) is a South Korean national research institute established in 2012. The institute is headquartered in Daejeon, with campuses in Seoul and Suwon. IBS was founded with the aim of promoting basic science research in Korea, and supporting the country’s transition to a knowledge-based economy.
IBS has a total of 21 research centers, covering a wide range of disciplines including mathematics, physics, chemistry, life sciences, earth sciences, and engineering. The institute also operates several cross-disciplinary platforms that provide support for its researchers’ work.
IBS scientists are at the forefront of fundamental research in Korea. In recent years, they have made significant contributions to our understanding of the universe and the laws that govern it; developed new materials with novel properties; and uncovered previously unknown mechanisms underlying life processes. This cutting-edge research is fueled by strong collaborative relationships between IBS researchers and their counterparts around the world.
IBS is committed to nurturing the next generation of scientists and engineers. To this end, the institute operates several programs that offer opportunities for young people to get involved in basic science research. These programs include internships for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as postdoctoral fellowships.
Through its innovative research and educational programs, IBS is playing a key role in building a vibrant community of basic science researchers in Korea that will help propel the country onto the global stage as a leading center for scientific discovery
