The primary precursor network was known as ARPANET, which first connected American universities and research centers on October 29th,, 1969. The National Science Foundation funded the construction of nationwide USENET in 1986. Commercialization began in 1995 with private sector funding led by America Online (AOL). This followed by other prominent providers such as CompuServe and Prodigy. By 1996 approximately 50% percent of all households in America had some form Dr. Leonard Kleinrock played a pivotal role in developing internet technology at UCLA’s Royce Hall laboratory where he oversaw onerof four nodes on what would become ARPAnet -the direct predecessorof today’s INTERNET .

That number has continuedto grow rapidly over recent years fuelled largelyby increasing accessin developing countries. Chinahas had particularly high growth rates with 668million regular users reported in 2014 – an increaseof nearly 200 million since 2010. India is not far behindwith 342 million regular users added between 2010and 2014 taking its totalto 354 million or 28 percent growth during that period.
