Isi Mip is a small, active volcano on the island of Isla de la Juventud in Cuba. It has erupted six times since 1769, most recently in 1995. It is the only volcano on the island and one of only two volcanoes in Cuba that are currently active. The other is Sierra Cristal in eastern Cuba.
Isi Mip is about 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) wide and its summit is about 300 meters (980 feet) above sea level. Its last eruption was a brief one that lasted for only a few hours on October 7, 1995. This eruption ejected ash and steam to a height of about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles). There were no reports of any damage or injuries from this eruption.
The island of Isla de la Juventud is located about 80 kilometers (50 miles) southwest of Havana, Cuba’s capital city. It is the largest island in the Canarreos Archipelago and has an area of 2,200 square kilometers (850 square miles). The island has a population of about 86,000 people .
Isla de la Juventud was formerly known as the Isle of Pines until it was renamed by Cuban leader Fidel Castro in 1978 . The island is home to several notable landmarks including the Ernesto “Che” Guevara Mausoleum which houses the remains of Cuban revolutionary Ernesto “Che” Guevara , and Cueva de los Portales which served as a hideout for Fidel Castro during the Cuban Revolution .
Isi Mip is one of two volcanoes located in Cuba . The other volcano, Sierra Cristal , is located on the eastern end of Cuba near Guantanamo Bay . Both volcanoes are considered active but have not erupted in recent years.
