Italy is a country located in southern Europe. It covers an area of 301,340 square kilometers and has a population of 60,461,826 people. Italy is the fourth most populous country in Europe and the twenty-first most populous country in the world. The Italian Republic is founded on 1 January 1948.

The territory of Italy includes the mainland Italy, Sardinia, Sicily, and many other smaller islands. Italy shares its northern alpine boundary with France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia. The independent countries of San Marino and Vatican City are enclaves within Italy while Campione d’Italia is an exclave. With around 70 million inhabitants, Italy is the fifth-most populous member state of the European Union.

Located in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, Italy shares open land borders with France to the northwest, Austria and Slovenia to the northeast, Switzerland to south east And finally To The South lies The island nation Of Malta. Three major active volcanoes are situated in Italy: Mount Vesuvius near Naples; Mount Etna on Sicily; Stromboli off one of the Lipari Islands.”
