Kagoshima University (鹿児島大学, Kagoshima Daigaku) is a comprehensive national university located in the city of Kagoshima, Kagoshima Prefecture, on the island of Kyushu in southwestern Japan. The university was founded in 1949 as the result of a merger between several smaller educational institutions. Today, it comprises 13 faculties and 11 graduate schools with a total student enrollment of around 19,000.
The university’s main campus is located about 10 minutes by bus from JR Kagoshima Station. It also has branch campuses in Satsumasendai and Amami-Oshima Island. In addition to its regular academic programs, the university also operates a number of research institutes and facilities, including the Center for Western Pacific Studies and the Institute for Tropical Medicine.
Kagoshima University is one of Japan’s leading research universities and is particularly well known for its work in the fields of geophysics, volcanology, and atmospheric science. It is also home to a number of world-renowned scholars, including Nobel Prize winner Kenzaburō Ōe.
