Keio University (慶應義塾大学, Keiō Gijuku Daigaku), abbreviated as Keio (慶應) or Kyōdai (京大), is a private research university located in Minato, Tokyo, Japan. It is the oldest institute of higher education in Japan and one of Japan’s National Seven Universities.
It was founded by Yukichi Fukuzawa as a school for modern Western learning in 1858 in Edo, Shogunal capital during the Tokugawa period. It played an important role in the Meiji Restoration of 1868, which led to the end of feudal rule and the start of direct imperial rule under Emperor Meiji. The university contributed significantly to Japan’s modernization effort thereafter as it became a center for new fields such as medicine, commerce, engineering, and literature while at the same time absorbing Western culture. Today it comprises 13 faculties: Letters; Economics; Law; Business and Commerce; Medicine; Science and Engineering; Policy Management; Environment and Information Studies; Nursing and Medical Care; Pharmacy; Culture and Communication Design. In addition to its main Hiyoshi campus in Yokohama city’s Kohoku ward that houses all its undergraduate schools except for those at Mita campus – known collectively as “Yokohama Campus”, Keio has additional campuses across Kanagawa Prefecture including its pioneer Mita Campus established in downtown Tokyo’s Mita district adjacent to Shinbashi station where graduate schools are concentrated along with facilities such as hospitals affiliated with the University.
