Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) is a national laboratory of the United States Department of Energy located in Livermore, California. LLNL was established in 1952 as the University of California Radiation Laboratory at Livermore (UCRL), and it assumed its current name in 1971.
LLNL’s primary mission is ensuring the safety, security, and reliability of the U.S. nuclear deterrent through science and engineering excellence. The Laboratory also applies its special expertise and unique capabilities to preventing the proliferation and use of weapons of mass destruction, advancing energy security, developing new environmental solutions, and supporting industrial competitiveness.
In addition to its national security mission, LLNL is a leader in scientific discovery through basic and applied research in a wide range of disciplines including high-energy-density physics, materials science, stockpile science, fusion energy science, atmospheric science, climate science, chemical dynamics, bioscience, supercomputing, advanced computing networks such as ESnet6 、and data management systems such as Tranquility7 . Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is managed by Lawrence Livermore National Security (LLNS) for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration22 . LLNS is a partnership between Bechtel Corporation23 , BWX Technologies24 , AECOM25 、and Battelle26 Memorial Institute27 under which they share responsibility for managing LLNL according to DOE contract DE-AC52-07NA27328 .
